J. Cole: ‘Crooked Smile’ video

J. Cole has released the video for his TLC-assisted single “Crooked Smile.” In the video, the North Carolina rapper portrays a low-ranking drug dealer whose life parallels and eventually intersects with a DEA agent. Cole is seen greeting his family and hosting a birthday party for a little girl, presumably his little sister, before agents burst in and things go awry.

The video pays tribute to Aiyana Jones, a 7-year-old Detroit girl who was killed by police during a raid in 2010. Authorities were filming an episode of A&E’s “The First 48” when they burst into a local home and Jones was fatally shot in the head. The officer who killed Aiyana, Joseph Weekley, contends that the shooting was accidental and his gun discharged during a struggle with the child’s grandmother.

Weekley went to trial for involuntary manslaughter this summer and his case was declared a mistrial.
