Usually, where there is smoke, there’s fire. Is Pharrell a serial thief?
For the second time in a month, Pharrell is being sued for allegedly stealing copyrighted material. Will.i.am filed a lawsuit that seeks to stop the launch of a YouTube channel called I AM OTHER. After Will fired off a cease and desist letter, demanding that Pharrell stop using “I AM,” Pharrell filed a lawsuit, asking a judge to protect his right to use the “I AM” moniker.
Will.i.am is strongly insinuated in the lawsuit, according to tmz.com, that Pharrell has a proven proclivity for duplicating or lifting other artists’ works and names.
Will.i.am says Pharrell co-founded a record label called Star Trak Entertainment.
Will points out that Pharrell is being sued by Marvin Gaye’s family for allegedly ripping off “Got to Give it Up” for his summer smash “Blurred Lines” for Robin Thicke.
Will claims Pharrell also tried to register the trademark, Pink Slime, which Will says is similar to Slime, owned by Mattel.
Back to the merits of the lawsuit. Will claims that with Pharrell using “I AM,” folks will get confused because they’re both on the same record label and they have similar musical styles.
Will.i.am is seeking compensatory damages for the alleged copyright infringement.
