Founded in 2006 by Beverly Bond, BLACK GIRLS ROCK! is a non-profit organization which mentors and empowers young girls and challenges stereotypes portrayed in the media. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! encourages a healthy development of self, empowerment through achieving goals and ensuring that their self-worth is determined by them and not what is portrayed in the media.
Each year BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Awards acknowledges women from various fields for their contribution to promoting positive images of women of color.
The 2013 BLACK GIRLS ROCK! Awards will be held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on October 26th and will air on BET on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. (EST).
Among those being honored, Queen Latifah, will receive the Rock Star Award, Patti LaBelle with the Living Legend Award and children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman
