Actor Idris Elba was headed from London to Johannesburg, South Africa to make an appearance at a press conference Saturday for his latest movie, the biopic Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, when he suffered a severe asthma attack.
Reports state that the attack occurred before Elba’s plane departed the UK. He was promptly deplaned and taken to a local hospital. Producers of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom are hoping for a speedy recovery. After all, Elba is scheduled for a second appearance in South Africa tonight, for the big premiere.
In the meantime, co-star and latest Bond girl Naomie Harris stood in for Elba touching on the political and social unrest the country has suffered saying, “I always find that so surprising given apartheid happened here. I always wonder who were these people that kept apartheid alive?”
“I do feel in 20 years the country has come an extraordinarily long way but change is slow and it takes generations.”
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom hits the US November 29 and debuts in the UK on January 3, 2014.
