The Maroon Tiger, the student newspaper of Morehouse College, a liberal arts institution for Black men, recently released “The Body Issue,” a feature of thirty students from Morehouse and Spelman College who agreed to pose nude. The featured models vary in every way imaginable, not just physically. The issue focuses on triumph over obstacles including abuse, addiction and body image.
The administration at Morehouse was in full support of the issue and students at Morehouse and Spelman were eager to participate. The Maroon Tiger’s managing editor, Jarred Loggins, explained how the idea came about.
“Frankly, I think the edition missed the mark. Here we are, living in a diverse country; the vast majority of Americans don’t look like [those featured in the issue] (not that having the perfect physique is a bad thing),” he said. “The Maroon Tiger staff wanted to create something of a socially conscious and radically different response to ESPN. And that’s what got the ball rolling.”
