We all knew that Mariah Carey’s time on “American Idol” with Nicki Minaj was no walk in the park. To put it bluntly, those two were as compatible as gasoline in a Molotov cocktail. But, we always thought that Carey at least enjoyed everything else about the show. However, in a new interview with Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, Carey reveals claims that being on “AI” was like being in hell and in her mind, no other person embodied the King, or rather Queen, of that fiery pit of singing competition hell than hip-hop “Monster” Minaj.
“Honestly, I hated it,” she confessed. “Here’s what it was. I was the first person who signed on … I thought it was going to be a three-person panel. They gave me a nice … monetary moment, and I was just like, ‘OK, Randy Jackson will be there; I’ve known him forever. He used to play bass for me. Like, this isn’t a big deal. This will be nothing.
“But it wasn’t that,” she continued. “It was like going to work every day in hell with Satan.”
As most of the free world knows, Carey and Minaj clashed early on during the season and the two were eventually filmed in a curse filled, verbal altercation that set the internet ablaze with shock, shade and awe. Sadly, things never got better between the two and they regularly took jabs at each other both on and off the judges’ chairs. Despite Carey’s hellish time with “Satan,” she claims that there is actually one thing she enjoyed about her time on “AI.”
“You know what I loved? I loved the contestants,” she said. “And some of them that were so good — and also really good people, you could tell — it was disappointing when [the judges] would, for political reasons, not put people through.”
Well, that’s one brutal claim that Carey has not so subtly implied about Minaj, but somehow we figure that Minaj is somewhere feeling flattered by Carey’s over-the-top, demonic analogy about her.
