One of the biggest surprises of the new hit flick “The Best Man Holiday” is that Nia Long’s character, Jordan, has gone from fawning over her best guy friend, Harper (Taye Diggs), to falling head over heels with her white boyfriend, Brian (Eddie Cibrian). Not so surprisingly, Jordan becomes the butt of her friend’s jokes thanks to her decision to “get down with the swirl,” but in a recent interview with MadameNoir.com, Long reveals that it was her idea to have her character date a white man.

“I thought it would be nice to add a little salt to the pepper. A little cream to the coffee,” Long explained.

“They meet because of the social worlds that they’re in and it works,” said Long, explaining how Jordan and Brian’s romance came to be. “When something works you don’t judge it based on what package it comes in. You judge it on how it makes you feel and if it works for your life.”

That same sentiment is reflective of our changing society as interracial relationships have slowly transformed from being taboo to becoming a thing of normalcy with each new generation. And according to Long, that social progress is exactly what she wanted to address with Jordan and Brian’s relationship.

“We’re living in a modern world where it happens and it’s OK and it’s no disrespect to any black man,” Long stated. “I love black men, but the reality is the sistas are marrying white men and the brothas are marrying white women and that’s the world that we live in. If it works for you then embrace it.”

Love certainly doesn’t have a color and Long isn’t the only black celebrity who supports interracial relationships. Check out some other stars who share her sentiment below. – nicholas robinson
