Ashanti says Nelly emotionally scarred her

Few celebrity couples were as tightlipped about their relationship as former hip-hop power couple Nelly and Ashanti. The former flames dated for nine years and spent most of that time denying they were a couple. It wasn’t until this past year when they broke up that they finally acknowledged their relationship. Since then, both of them have continued to remain mum about the details of their time together, but Ashanti recently gave fans a bit of insight into life post-Nelly when she revealed that he left her with emotional scars.

During a recent interview with Hot 97’s Ebro and Laura Styles, Ashanti had a rare moment of candidness when she revealed that she and Nelly are kind of in limbo when it comes to their current friendship.

“Nelly and I are kind of in the space where, I’m kinda like focusing on my career, he’s focusing on what he’s doing, you know there’s a lot of things that happened this year, you know a lot of things kinda went public more than other things have gone public before … there are things that were said and things that were done, that probably shouldn’t have been said or done, but they have been,” said Ashanti.

Ashanti later revealed that she has a song called “Scars” on her upcoming album, Braveheart, in which she sings about the emotional scars that Nelly left her with after their relationship ended.

“There’s a a record I have called scars which is a very deep record. He put a couple of scars on me — not physically — we don’t want to put that out there!” said Ashanti.

“We’ve definitely scarred each other, in a sense to say. It’s a deep record and it’s something that I feel I’m revealing very much more than I have on previous records. I’m really, really excited. It takes you on a nice emotional level,” she added.

Well, it makes sense that Nelly and Ashanti have both left indelible marks, for better or for worse, on each other. It’s only natural after nine years together. But hopefully, they can one day undo all of that damage and come to a place of friendship like these other former couple below have. –nicholas robinson
