Jameis Winston not charged

Florida State’s star quarterback Jameis Winston will not be charged with rape. The news was announced today by State Attorney William Meggs.

“We prosecute the cases that we have evidence on,” Meggs said Thursday. “We have a duty as prosecutors to determine if each case has a reasonable likelihood of conviction,” Meggs said. “After reviewing the facts in this case, we do not feel that we can reach those burdens,” he added.

As previously reported Winston was accused of sexually assaulting a woman on Dec. 7, 2012. The accuser claimed that the night of the alleged assault she had been drinking at a local Tallahassee bar and her memory was “very broken.” Police said the woman recalled getting into a taxi with a “non-descript” black man and entering an apartment. The black man, who she said was Winston, then took off her clothes and raped her as she tried to fight him off.

At one point the woman told police that another black man with dreadlocks entered the room and told the man to stop, but the suspect led her into a bathroom where he “completed the act.” She then said she was redressed by her attacker and taken home on a scooter.

Winston’s DNA was later found in the victim’s underwear. He and his attorney contend however that the sex was consensual. It was later revealed that DNA from multiple men was discovered.

Winston has been nominated for the Heisman trophy. If he wins the honor he will become the second consecutive freshman to win the award following behind Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.
