Mowry’s career has had its twists and turns, and in this era of gossip blogs and media oversaturation, she has had to endure some scrutiny that wasn’t always wanted. She and her sister’s personal lives were put on display when the pair decided to star in a reality show called “Tia & Tamera,” and Tia says that she learned a lot about how the public can reduce a celebrity to a “type.”
“I don’t necessarily focus on misconceptions that the public has of me. I live my life for myself and my family. I don’t allow other people’s opinions and perceptions of me to validate who I am,” she says, “but when you do a reality show, such as ‘Tia & Tamera,’ I think though it is a reality show, it’s still television. It’s still a show. I am allowing cameras to come in and see my life, but it’s just a window of my life. It’s not my life. So when people make judgments based off of what they see on television, I think that’s unhealthy.”
Tia feels that though the public may think of her as the “stronger” twin, there is more to her than just what they’ve seen on that particular show. You may watch her on TV, but you don’t really know Tia Mowry.
“I think people think [I have] a strong personality. But that’s just part of me, it’s not all of me,” she continues. “I do have a sensitive side. I have an edgy side — but I also have a side that likes to be a princess sometimes. When you do reality shows, people tend to put you in a box. People would depict me as the more aggressive twin or I’m the stronger personality between the two. But it’s very scary to allow other people’s opinions and views of you to validate who you are [so] it’s definitely not something that I focus on.”
