South Carolina sheriff refuses to lower U.S. flag for Nelson Mandela

When President Obama ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of the passing of former South African prisoner-turned-president Nelson Mandela, one public official refused to comply.

Rick Clark, the sheriff of Pickens County in South Carolina flagrantly defied Obama when he pronounced his desire for flags to be flown in honor of the 95-year-old world leader — from the White House to government buildings and military outposts— on Monday, December 9. A rare honor for a foreign dignitary that Clark doesn’t feel Madiba deserves.

Despite all that Mandela did for global peace and democracy, because he wasn’t American, Clark feels that only South Africa should honor him.
