A 13-year-old girl went to the hospital to have her tonsils removed and ended up brain-dead. According to the Oakland Tribune, Jahi McMath went to the Children’s Hospital Oakland on Dec. 9 to have the surgery. She was scheduled to leave the hospital on Dec. 10.
However, while resting after her surgery, McMath began to bleed from her nose and mouth. Her family said that nurses were nonchalant about the bleeding. When doctors finally arrived, they discovered swelling on McMath’s brain. She eventually stopped breathing, but doctors were able to revive her.
As her heart continued to beat, McMath was declared brain-dead and doctors have pushed the family to take McMath off of life support. The family however, will keep her on life support as long as possible.
The hospital has apologized to the family and said an investigation will take place. However, the family could possible hire outside investigators to explore if any form of medical malpractice occurred during or after McMath’s surgery.
