First off, the ‘Cupid Shuffle’ is world-renowned and everybody’s doing it from all ethnic backgrounds to celebrities as well. How is that feeling knowing that you have made an impact like that?
Well it’s a great feeling to know that you’re going to have something around forever, it kind of trumps having a whole bunch of hits and people don’t know who you are in 2 or 3 year span. This record has allowed me to work since 2007, of course it took 10 years for me to get that record but once it caught on and once it hit it’s been a great feeling to go to any market and have a record that resonates with any genre.
Talk about having a gospel and hip-hop influence in your music.
Initially when I got signed that was a big conflict, the label was having a hard time figuring out what kind of music I did. Coming from the gospel roots I think that’s what put so much energy into the record. You know sometimes you listen to a record and you listen to the words a certain way and the “Cupid Shuffle’ feels like that and I think that it comes from my positive background and my roots of singing gospel. I put so much into that record it makes it feel like I was coming from my soul when I was singing it.
Being the son of a preacher, how did your father inspire you?
Well God first, that’s the foundation for my life is God first. I’m glad that I was raised in the church, I keep fighting when people said no. But my dad wasn’t with it at first, it wasn’t a good reflection to the church but I always told my father that I would keep it clean and keep it smooth so it never really crossed over to being something that he was just totally disgusted by. As I started becoming successful and things were going well, he saw the vision I had and now he would bust the ‘Cupid Shuffle’ on cue.
What’s going on with Cupid right now?
Well right now I’m on the road and I have a record that’s sizzling and it’s on the charts and starting to hit all of these radio stations and it’s called,‘Go Head Baby’and is produced by Mr. Collipark himself. That record is kind of like we decided to take the ‘Wobble’ energy and take the energy from the Cupid Shuffle’ and put it together to make a powerhouse record. If you go online you would see several videos of people doing the new line danc, and we’re getting this out to the public and showing people the new smash record on deck.
