Imagine the shock of the staff at the morgue when a lifeless body rises from a supine position. Shock is an under statement.

Naivasha District Hospital  Superintendent Dr. Joseph Mburu is investigating why Paul Mutora, 24, was pronounced dead when he was actually unconscious. Two attendants heard noises coming from a side room in the morgue. In an attempt to find the source of the noise, they found Mutora breathing.

A witness tells Kenyan newspaper Kenya Star, “They took to their heals screaming.” While hospital attendants working in the  morgue were mortified, his family members were relieved because they’d visited the body and had already started making funeral arrangements for the husband and father of one who’d ingested insecticide in an alleged suicide attempt.

“The effect of atropines [slows the heart rate, making the beat irregular] and most of the time it causes dilation of the pupils. These two observations are used to make a conclusion that someone has lost their life,” explains Dr. Mburu.

“This was a mistake from the start. I apologize to my father as I prepare to go and take care of my wife and child,” offers Mutora.
