A 16-year-old straight A-student was beaten by Philadelphia police and forced to undergo emergency surgery after the altercation. According to reports by Philly.com, Darrin Manning, who attends Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School, was on the way to play in his school’s basketball game when police officers near a subway station approached him and his friends.
The teens ran in fear until one officer caught Manning. Without probable cause, the police slammed Manning into the police wagon and threw him on the ground. Several other officers approached Manning and a female officer was overly aggressive with the teen. The female officer grabbed Manning’s genitals, squeezed and pulled them until his testicle ruptured.
Although he was the victim, Manning was eventually arrested and charged with simple assault and resisting arrest. The next day, Manning had to go to the emergency room and have surgery on his testicle. The injury may have caused him to become sterile for life.
Manning’s parents are calling for a full investigation on the police who beat and arrested their son. The officers involved have yet to be reprimanded but the Philadelphia police say they will launch an internal investigation.
