Anthony, 29, imprudently announced on national TV that he looks forward to free agency following the 2013-14 season and cherishes the idea of teams bidding on him, for which he received considerable blowback from fans and critics alike. But, if there is one person who knows Melo better than anyone else on the planet, it would be his wife La La (Vasquez) Anthony.
La La Anthony, 34, believes the New York Knicks superstar will re-sign with the team this summer.
In an interview with Bravo TV’s Watch What Happens Live, C-Mel’s wife gave Knicks fans a reason for optimism while at the same time taking a seemingly unnecessary shot at the city of Denver.
I definitely think he will stay [in New York]. And I support him wherever he wants to go. Listen, I used to live in Denver with him. If I can live in Denver, I can live anywhere. I just want him to be happy.
The superstar forward is currently signed through the 2014-15 season, but he has the ability to opt out and become a free agent on July 1.
In an interview with the New York Observer’s Rafi Kohan in October, Anthony said, “I want to be a free agent.” However, he told TNT that he wanted “to retire in New York” not long after that interview.
Should he hit free agency, Anthony would likely headline what is expected to be a very strong class.
In his 11th season, the league’s defending scoring champion is averaging 27.2 points per contest to go with what would be a career-high 9.0 rebounds. Melo also dropped a Madison Square Garden-record 62 points against the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday, Jan. 24, and following that up with 35 in a win against the Los Angeles Lakers two days later.
Is La La giving us clues into the mindset of her husband, or is she simply speaking from her heart since New York is where she came to national fame on MTV?
