A 16-year-old said she strangled her 43-year-old boyfriend during rough sex because he failed to use the safe word. According to AZ Central, the teenager Jessica Burlew pleaded not guilty to second degree murder.

Burlew told the judge she was engaging in rough sex with her boyfriend, Jason Ash, when they began choking each other. She said she used an electrical wire while choking Ash. Burlew said she never heard Ash use the safe word so she continued to to choke him. The safe word is a word or phrase that is used by S&M participants who want to stop when rough sex goes too far.

Ash eventually died and the teen said she cut him with a razor blade in an attempt to revive him. Authorities eventually arrived at Ash’s home and they arrested the teen and charged her with murder.

Burlew will return to court in March.
