A bloody scene unfolded in China as a group of at least ten knife wielding men hacked and sliced people in a train station on Saturday. Chinese authorities state that the attack was “organized and premeditated” leaving at least 33 people dead and up to 162 people seriously injured. Many of the victims were waiting in line to buy train tickets. The attack occurred at the Kunming Railway Station in Yunnan province and is one of China’s busiest train stations and largest cities. At least four of the attackers were shot dead by police inside and outside the station.
Social media websites are now showing the aftermath of the attack. Pictures show bodies sprawled throughout the station and pools of blood in various areas. The Chinese government is calling this a terrorist attack by Chinese Muslims known as Uighur (WEE-GER). The Uighur people live in the remote far western region of Xinjiang, where Muslim separatists want their own autonomous region that respects the Uighur culture and Islam. The Xinjiang region borders Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and has been a source of conflict in China in the past.
