300: Rise of an Empire

Billed as a prequel and a sequel, fans of the original 300 will not be disappointed with this 3-D version. Although it’s debatable as to whether a film this intense even needs to be in 3-D, by all accounts, it is well done. It also reportedly has the most riveting sex scene of 2014; of course the lion’s share of the year has yet to unfold, so there’s no way to know if it will be knocked down a peg or two on that score, but it’s doubtful.
Get ready to take a white-knuckle ride with the Greeks and Persians as the titans battle for supremacy. –p.d. lee
