Need for Speed shouldn’t have tried so hard to be Fast & Furious. First of all, Aaron Paul is not Paul Walker, despite the sotto voce delivery of his lines. Yes, there is street racing. There are fast cars. The police are in pursuit. There is a friend’s death to be avenged. The requisite beauties are in place. But the sum of those parts doesn’t quite add up to a winning formula. Despite its best intentions, this film doesn’t make us believe that it is the heir apparent to the Fast franchise throne. Not even close. –p.d. lee
