rolling out: How did you get started in the makeup business?
Shayla: I worked for MAC for seven years and freelanced on the side. I was living in Arizona and I transferred with MAC to L.A. and the struggle was real. One of my coworkers told me to try Instagram [to promote myself] and it took off from there.
rolling out: How did you get your celebrity clientele?
Shayla: Instagram! Instagram has changed my life. I started posting pictures and then I worked with Flo Rida for the Grammys because I was referred by a friend. I did a magazine shoot for HerImports and Porsha [Williams] was one of the models and she started using me [to do her makeup]. From there other people saw my work and it went from there.
rolling out: What are your must have products?
Shayla: For eyebrows, which I’m starting to be known for, I use Anastasia products for my kit. Her pro brow palette is an essential product for me because it has every color. Kevyn Aucoin concealers are great for my kit, also my beauty blender which I use to apply foundation and [false] eyelashes; I would die without lashes!
rolling out: What is the best way to do a five minute face?
Shayla: Foundation, blush, lashes and eyebrows. You can do that in five minutes.
rolling out: You’re also well known for your hair. What brand of extensions do you use?
Shayla: Hair is everything next to lashes and eyebrows. I only wear hair from The Virgin Hair Fantasy. One of my favorite textures is Brazilian body wave. I love it you can put as much heat as you want and it’s not going to break. I love having long hair, I feel like it’s sexy. Makeup and hair makes everything ten times better.
