Turntable Tuesdays: Joe Kollege’s 5 spring and summer classics

jk

Our friend, DJ Joe Kollege, returns to #TurntableTuesdays to bless us with five of his favorite spring and summer jams.

Check out his picks.

kool

1. Kool & The Gang – “Summer Madness”
This is the perfect summertime song. Here you have a group that is known for it’s funked out R&B songs, flip the script and made one of the “Koolest” songs ever. This song puts my mind at ease whenever I hear it. The world comes to a standstill once that synth starts blaring out of my speakers.
biggie
2. Notorious BIG – “One More Chance (Remix)”
This song makes the list because of the time it was released. I remember it coming out around May of ’95. It was definitely on my soundtrack for that summer. You heard it on the radio every ten minutes, the video was in heavy rotation on BET and MTV, and it was being blasted out of just about every car rolling around the city.

3. Al Green – “Simply Beautiful”
Al knew what he was doing when he made this song. It should be a part of every man’s summer play list for when they’re just chillin’ with their significant other on a stormy, summer night. It will definitely set the mood right … if you know what I mean!

bob

4. Bob Marley & The Wailers – “Turn Your Lights Down Low”
This is another song that should be on everyone’s summertime late night play list. It’s the perfect love ballad for the perfect season. Most Reggae love songs are great summertime songs. This just so happens to be one of my faves.

5. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince – “Summertime”
I know this is like an obvious choice for a favorite summer songs list, but if you grew up in an area like Will Smith did in West Philadelphia, you can surely relate to everything he was rapping about. It’s like he described a typical Saturday during the summer. We all can remember that in order to go to that BBQ that everyone was talking about, we had to go to the barbershop or beauty salon to get right, cop a new outfit from the mall, and make sure our car was washed (for those of us who owned a car). I also have to mention that the Kool & The Gang “Summer Madness” sample is the perfect fit for this summertime classic.
