AKAs raise nearly $20,000 for American Cancer Society

It’s always nice to set a goal and exceed it. The Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter, aka UAO of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated has something to high five about. It’s Gwinnett Relay For Life team raised nearly $20,000 in the fight against cancer, benefitting the American Cancer Society.

UAO is no stranger to making strides in the fight against cancer. In 2013, the chapter was bestowed the honor of “platinum level” sponsorship, raising over $12,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year, the team surpassed its fundraising goals by leaps and strides in support of funding the research needed to find a cure.

“Even the torrential rain at this year’s Gwinnett Relay for Life could not dampen UAO’s passion to do all we could to ensure our communities have the chance for “more birthdays” via the future eradication of cancer, said Karan Rhodes, president, Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter in a statement to press. “I am so proud that our chapter members participated in record numbers at this year’s event and continue to be forever committed to the dream of a world without cancer.”

The chapter was previously recognized by Alpha Kappa Alpha South Atlantic regional director, Marsha Lewis Brown, for their philanthropic efforts and spirit of giving. Wellness is a program initiative UAO championed in its efforts to make the public aware of epidemics such as cancer, asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, etc.

Andria S. Daniels, vice president, Upsilon Alpha Omega Chapter said, “Upsilon Alpha Omega continues its dedication and goal of ending cancer in our lifetime through our fundraising and education activities.”

Each year members of UAO’s team, along with their families and friends support a bevy of activities and fundraisers in support of The Gwinnett County Relay For Life held at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. They include: UAO RFL team shirt sales; April and May Dress Down For A Cure (chapter members pay $5 to dress casually for meetings); UAO Paints For A Cure (public fundraiser); Gwinnett RFL event food sales, just to name a few.

Team members include survivors and those who have lost loved ones and friends to this dreaded disease. Identified by team colors of salmon pink and apple green, members look forward to joining hands and hearts under a pink tent at the Gwinnett County Relay For Life event.

Daniels added, “UAO has been a supporter of the American Cancer Society since its chartering in 1994. To date, UAO has raised over $90,000 for the American Cancer Society. We are excited to announce this year, as UAO celebrates 20 years of service in Gwinnett County, UAO raised over $20,000 on our Relay For Life team.”
