This past Saturday, Los Angeles native Dijon “DJ Mustard” McFarLane made his way to Brisk Bodega Chicago at Double Door located in Wicker Park.
Neighborhood bodegas have served as an urban cultural mecca for many years. For that reason, the Brisk brand launched the Brisk Bodega platform in June 2013, to create one spot to present cross-cultural trends, artists and events to its fans. Brisk Bodega has evolved into a national tour; a go-to hub and intersection of urban music, culture and style.
Before Mustard took the stage, local DJ MoonDawg set the tone for the night, later Do Or Die, Tree and Chris Crack kept things going with their performances. The vibe stayed consistent as concert-goers were able to enjoy cool signature Brisk cocktails: #turnuptea (Brisk Lemonade and vodka), #nothalfbad (Brisk Half/Half & vodka) and #beentrilltropics (Brisk Tropical Lemonade and vodka).
How clever.
Mustard describes his beats as “undefinable.” Says Mustard, “I just want people to hear my music and feel good; go to the club, dance, have fun and get home safe…none of that gang-banging stuff.”
The New York Times has praised Mustard’s sound, stating “it’s made for some of the starkest and most vibrant hip-hop of the last year or two … booming and square, like well-sequenced jabs with no need for combinations.”
I took a few moments to chat with Mustard about some of his recent projects, the Chicago rap scene and working at Roc Nation. Check out the interview and photo gallery below:
