At the 2014 BET Awards, Nicki Minaj won Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and made comments during her acceptance speech regarding female emcees not writing their lyrics; comments that were widely interpreted to be a jab at newcomer Iggy Azalea, who has been rumored to have ghostwriters. Minaj later addressed the controversy via Twitter, writing that “The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!”
Minaj went on to explain that her words were intended to champion women writers, but Azalea’s boyfriend, NBA guard Nick Young, recently revealed that Iggy was upset by what Nicki said at the show. Reporters recently asked him about the incident.
“Oh man! You know, it is what it is,” Young reportedly said at a party earlier this week. “I had to deal with the aftermath when she came home. … When she got home and was going through her phone and hearing all the things and people talking trash about her, you know I had to be there for her. But you know what, Iggy is doing big things and it’s scaring a lot of people!”
After admitting that the incident got to Iggy, Young quickly tried to downplay his famous girlfriend’s reaction.
“She kind of brushed it off!” he said. “She don’t [sic] let it get to her. She’s number one right now so what can you do when you are at the top right now? Of course they will all come at you!”
