Could it be life imitating art? Or art imitating life?

On Friday, rapper Jevante Johnson was robbed and killed in the Chicago suburb of Calumet City. According to the Calumet City police chief Edward Gilmore, Jamal Hoare, 22, and Jacob Wilson, 19, are being charged with first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery in connection with the death of Johnson.

According to local news, Johnson, 20, allegedly set up a drug deal with Hoare and Wilson, Gilmore said. He got in the back of their vehicle at about 8:45 p.m. on Friday in the 300 block of 157th Street and said he was robbing them, Gilmore said. The person sitting next to Johnson in the back of the car pulled out a gun and shot him, Gilmore said. Another person in the vehicle was also hurt in the shooting.

Johnson, whose stage name was “Vonno,” was a member of the hip-hop group Stain Gain. He was preparing for the release of his new mixtape, Go Hard or Go Broke, according to Allhiphop.com. Ironically, he had just recorded his lead single, “I Might Die,” just days before his actual death.

Hoare and Wilson were each held on a $1.5 million bond, according to the Cook County Sheriff’s office. Another person wanted in connection with Johnson’s murder is not in custody, Gilmore said.

Both are next scheduled to appear in court on August 15.
