Ever since Iggy Azalea made her way to the top of the charts with her colossal hit “Fancy,” hip-hop fans have been pitting her against rap’s reigning queen, Nicki MInaj. Matters were made even worse at the BET Awards when Minaj allegedly took shots at Azalea during her acceptance speech. Although many have assumed that the two have been waging a quiet war with each other all along, Minaj and Azalea silenced their critics when they showed each other love at Sunday night’s MTV VMAs.
In a brief backstage video from MTV, Minaj can be seen about to give an interview when Azalea walks up to her and congratulates her on her opening performance with Ariana Grande and Jessie J.
“You did great, don’t worry about it,” said Azalea referring to Minaj’s wardrobe malfunction during Grande’s “Bang Bang.”
“Thank you baby,” Minaj responded as she smiled at azalea.
The exchange was brief and sweet, and even though some fans still won’t believe that Azalea and Minaj aren’t beefing, it’s still nice to see the MCs buck the stereotype that female rappers, and women in general, can’t get along with each other. Perhaps if fans, labels and media sites alike didn’t perpetuate the idea that women can’t get along, it would be a lot easier for female rappers to show solidarity. –nicholas robinson
