D-Nice breaks down the art of deejaying: ‘Gotta watch body language’

D-Nice is one of the most sought-after deejays in the world. The rapper-producer-turntablist is constantly in-demand, and he recently spoke to rolling out about what it means to be a truly great DJ; revealing that there are some basic rules that every spinner has to understand.

“Being a dope DJ is being able to read the crowd,” D-Nice says. “People aren’t going to always dance to what I want them to dance to. So I got to be able to watch body language when I play music. I think I’m pretty good at that. I stay busy for some reason!”

The Harlem-born hip-hopper says that too many deejays forget that song transitions are as important as song selection.

“Make sure your blends are okay,” he advises. “When you DJ a party — no one wants to hear you scratch. They want to hear good music and they want it to flow very well. I do believe that’s one of my strong points — I do know how to play music well.”

And there’s one fundamental rule that DJ D-Nice lives by — and is obvious as it may seem, he wants to make sure all aspiring deejays don’t forget the golden rule.

“Have a great catalog of music,” the former Boogie Down Productions member says with a chuckle. “Without good music, you have nothing to dance to!”
