Louise Milan, age 68, is a God-fearing grandmother with health conditions. She has endured multiple heart operations to treat her atrial fibrillation. So you can imagine the terror she must have felt when the Evansville, Indiana, Police SWAT team raided her home. The tech savvy grandmother was suspected of being an Internet terrorist in an online group discussion. One of the threats that police attributed to the senior citizen was “Cops beware! I’m proud of my country but I hate police of any kind. I have explosives … Evansville will feel my pain.”
When the police department was notified of the online threats, the police SWAT team headed out to the address from which the Internet signal originated. That address did indeed belong to Louise Milan; however, her neighbor was hijacking her wireless Internet connection. When the police went into action they threw concussion and flash bang grenades breaking windows and destroying furniture pictures and other property.
Milan was on the second floor of her home cleaning the bedroom while her daughter was in another room. When she heard the noise she thought her granddaughter was in danger and ran to her aid. It was at that point she encountered a SWAT team member pointing his gun at her and yelling for her to get on the floor. Her daughter suffered a similar fate as she was watching TV in another room; police SWAT team members forced her to the floor and handcuffed her. Both women were marched from the home in full view of their neighbors embarrassing the grandmother and the granddaughter.
It was later discovered that the neighbor, Derek Murray, had noticed that the senior citizen had not used simple password protection for her wireless signal. He accessed it without permission using a smart phone and browsed the Internet from his parents’ house. He was arrested by the FBI and pleaded guilty to multiple charges. Currently Milan has a lawsuit pending over this raid that occurred in 2012 but it was not until a few weeks ago that helmet camera footage from a SWAT team member was discovered. The footage details the joking of the SWAT team members before the raid, during the raid and the aftermath. The court documents that were filed details the facts of the raid and the requested relief.
