YMCMB is going through a slight rough patch. With artists like Tyga and Lil Twist publicly railing against the label, another star has decided to move on from the house that Birdman built. Singer Jay Sean has announced that he is parting ways with YMCMB after five years on the label. He spoke to Billboard about his decision and shared that he and the CEOs of Cash Money are still on good terms, he’s just decided it wasn’t the place for him any longer.
“I had and still maintain a great relationship with Slim and Baby,” he says. “They believed in me and my talent and our partnership obviously garnered a lot of pop success.”
Sean is the best-selling urban artist in the United Kingdom and he’s prepping a new mixtape, Mistress II for release next month. He shared that his artistic vision demands that go in a different direction, indicating that he and the Cash Money family just weren’t on the same page in that regard.
“It got to the point where I was chasing pop success and ‘the smash’ when really my heart wasn’t in it anymore,” he says. “That’s not why I got into this game.”
“When Sade drops a new album, you know she’s not going to be suddenly singing over an EDM beat produced by the hottest DJ at the time or jumpin’ on the bandwagon of what the latest ‘sound’ is,” Sean explained. “You should be able to do you; that’s what differentiates an artist from a singer.”
