Despite slowest weekend of the year, ‘Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ stays atop weekend box office

Mockingjay

It was not a good weekend for the movie business.

In what is being called the lowest selling weekend of the year, there was little movement at this weekend’s box office. The only new entry was Egyptian horror The Pyramid, which brought in $1.3 million to land at the No. 9 spot.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part I managed to hold on to the top spot for the third week in a row raking in just $21.6 million. Penguins of Madagascar also maintained its from position last week with a purse just over $11 million. Horrible Bosses 2 jumped two spots from fifth place to third with $8.6 million. Big Hero 6 and Interstellar rounded out the top 5 with $8.1 million and an even $8 million, respectively.
