Nicki Minaj has been in rare form with the release of her new album, The Pinkprint. The once cagey and kooky MC has begun letting down her guard and has been opening up about some of the most personal and troubling periods of her life, including a shocking lyrical revelation that she once got pregnant when she was a teen. In her latest Rolling Stone interview, Minaj is finally opening up more about the pregnancy and the abortion that followed.
Minaj first talked about her previous abortion on the deeply confessional Pinkprint opening track “All Things Go,” as she rapped “My child with Aaron would’ve have been sixteen any minute / So in some ways I feel like Caiah is the both of them / It’s like he’s Caiah’s little angel looking over him.”
And in her new cover feature for Rolling Stone, Minaj talks about her teenage love affair and her pregnancy with Aaron, an older man from Queens, New York, whom she met while she was attending LaGuardia High School.
“I thought I was going to die,” admits Minaj about finding out that she was pregnant. “I was a teenager. It was the hardest thing I’d ever gone through.”
Minaj says that the decision “haunted me all my life,” but she says that it was the right decision for her to make at the time.
“It’d be contradictory if I said I wasn’t pro-choice. I wasn’t ready. I didn’t have anything to offer a child,” she said.
Considering that so many other women have been in Minaj’s shoes, it’s a good thing that she’s giving a public voice to such a personal and difficult experience. Hopefully, her fans will find solidarity in Minaj sharing her story with the world.
