During a recent visit to the Atlanta headquarters for Xernona Clayton, the founder of the Trumpet Foundation, rolling out had an opportunity to sit down with the civil rights legend and gain some intriguing insight on the Trumpet Awards created to herald the accomplishments of Black Americans who have succeeded against immense odds and the significance of the iconic trumpet.
“Segregation and discrimination have done great harm to our society. We’re trying to dispel and change that by showcasing those who’ve made excellence their byword,” she says.
Popular TV personalities, honorees and celebrities were in full regalia at the highly touted event celebrating achievement.
This year’s honorees included: Jamie Foxx, Academy Award-winning actor; Janelle Monáe, singer, songwriter, producer and model; Tommy Hilfiger, principal designer, Tommy Hilfiger; Guy Vickers, president, PVH Foundation and SVP, global community relations; Lou Brock, baseball legend; Arnold W. Donald, president and CEO of Carnival Corporation; The Isley Brothers; Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, president and dean, Morehouse School of Medicine; and Franklyn R. Wilson, chairman, Sunshine Holdings Ltd., Bahamas.
