Baltimore police may have killed unarmed Black man after severing his spine

Another unarmed Black man may have died due to negligence by police. According to the BaltImore Sun, Freddie Gray, 25, was apprehended by Baltimore police officers in the early morning hours of April 12.

A cellphone video captured Gray screaming as he’s being dragged to a police van by three White police officers. Nearly 30 minutes after his arrest, Gray was rushed to a nearby hospital. When he arrived at the hospital, doctors discovered that his spine was 80 percent severed near his neck where three bones were broken. Gray soon went into a coma after arriving at the hospital. On April 19, Gray died from his injuries.


Several protests have taken place in Baltimore with the message of justice for Gray and his family. The city’s mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, and the police commissioner held a joint press conference asking for calm in the streets of Baltimore. However, the police officers who arrested Gray have yet to be charged with a crime. They are currently on administrative leave while the case is being investigated.
