Taraji P. Henson and Viola Davis earn nods for lead actress in a drama series
Viola Davis’ professor Annalise Keating and Taraji Henson’s Cookie Lyon are bombshells in their own right. Keating is a stern legal eagle in the courtroom and the classroom. Cookie is a monster music maven co-heading the hottest label in the game.
Their 2015 Emmy nominations are so important because if Davis or Henson wins, it would be the first time EVER a Black woman snagged the coveted award (in this category). Before Kerry Washington’s 2013 nomination for “Scandal”, the last black woman to be nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series was Cicely Tyson in 1995. Washington was nominated again in 2014.
On the flip side, Henson’s co-star, Terrence Howard, was shut out, while Anthony Anderson (“black-ish”), Don Cheadle (“House of Lies”), David Oyelowo (“Nightingale”), Andre Braugher (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), Cicely Tyson (“How To Get Away with Murder”), Queen Latifah (“Bessie”) and Uzo Aduba (“Orange is the New Black”) earned nods.
The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will air live on Fox on Sept. 20 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Andy Samberg, star of the Fox comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” will host.
Here is the 2015 Emmy nominations complete list.
