Summer made its presence felt in a big way in Chicago this past Saturday. The 90-degree weather was in full effect; however it didn’t stop anyone from enjoying themselves at the fifth annual Taste of WVON. The food trucks and vendors lined Lorraine Dixon park on 87th and Dauphin in Chicago. WVON — The Voice of a Nation — made sure there was something available for everybody. This year’s festivities included live music from the one and only Sheila E.
We had an opportunity to speak with Sir Henry Cheatham, who hosts a classic blues and R&B show every Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. on the radio station, and he shared his feelings on Taste of WVON. “I think the importance of this festival is that we get a chance to do something here on the south side and you get a chance for people to see that they can have a nice clean day of activity and the entertainment has always been good,” he said.
We also spoke with TL Williams and The Storm Chaser Element who were opening up for Sheila E. and asked them why they feel like the Taste of WVON is necessary. “I feel like the Taste of WVON to take place — especially in a city that goes through a lot — is very necessary. For us to be able to come together on the South Side, because we don’t have a lot of festivals like this on the South Side, means so much to the people who live here.”
