Nao Yoshioka has already taken Japan by storm, but now she’s ready for American music lovers to discover her work. The soulful Japanese singer has released her debut album, The Light, in the U.S., featuring her breakout song, “Make the Change.”

Yoshioka began living in New York in 2009 and spent two and a half years soaking up the creativity and culture the city had to offer. She used those experiences to deliver fresh and urban vibes into her music. During that time, she was able to reach the ‘Top Dog’ round on the Apollo Theater Amateur Night and beat out around 40,000 participants at the McDonald’s Gospelfest to make it into the final round.

The rising star signed with Sweet Soul Records in 2012 and she’s been a hit in Japan ever since, with her music being featured on a commercial and played in heavy rotation on the radio. She is excited, however, for her art to finally be recognized in North America.

“I’m so excited to finally start my career in the United States and looking forward to [working] with some amazing people,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “One of my biggest dreams has come true. I put my soul into the album, an album really about me. The cover songs on the album express my musical history. The originals express my own message of my life.”
