“Now, this is the story all about how ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air‘ got flipped, turned upside-down…”
Big blockbuster star Will Smith may soon return to the small screen. The actor’s production company, Overbrook Entertainment, is developing a new family comedy in vein of “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” reports EW. On Thursday, earlier reports stated that the new series would reboot the classic NBC series sitcom for modern audiences.
However, new reports state that the upcoming series will only share a few surface similarities to the ’90’s comedy in that it could be a fish-out-of-water story.
Next year will mark 20 years since “Fresh Prince” left the airwaves, but Smith has not forgotten his star-making role and rightly so. Since then, the 46-year-old has frequently performed the show’s iconic theme song in public, including on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” this past February. “Every country in the world, that is the thing I am most known for. No matter how big the movies get, it’s Fresh Prince everywhere,” Smith told Graham Norton in a 2012 interview, before performing the theme.
And he may be right… but will audiences respond well to a reboot or even spin-off in the absence of James Avery aka Uncle Phil? Maybe this would be a great opportunity for a tribute show to Avery. Stay tuned as the story develops.
