Father killed while working overtime at a Manhattan federal building

Kevin Downing, 68, a retired U.S. Army Reserves captain angered to the point of murder because he was fired by the Department of Labor Statistics for supposedly blowing the whistle on what he called “disclosing inexcusable public waste.” Idrissa Camara, 53, had volunteered for overtime at DOL’s 201 Varick Street (SoHo) building and should have gone home at about 4 pm on Friday, according to officials. A security guard, he was fatally shot by the deranged gunman when turned to greet Downing at the W. Houston St. entrance of the building. The shooter opened fire.

The Harlem father of four was an hour into his second shift when he was shot in the building’s lobby, He lost his own father three months ago.

A resident of Fort Lee, New Jersey, Downing proceeded past his victim and went through the metal detector and advanced towards the elevators in the building. He encountered another employee and then shot himself with his handgun. Three guns were found near his dead body. A relative of Downing says the gunman’s home was in foreclosure. Another source says Downing had been denied a job was denied a job with FJC Security, but this has not been confirmed. Downey was currently working as a realtor.
