VMAs red carpet highlights, slut shaming, cultural appropriation and some other stuff

MTV VMA Red Carpet 2015 via Twitter-9

The stars who walked the 2015 MTV VMA red carpet showcased fashion that ranged from posh to protest. Amber Rose’s entourage that included her bestie Blac Chyna, both wearing bodysuits peppered with slurs “whore,” “stripper,” “gold digger,” “bitch” and “slut,” and their two male companions wearing black outfits decorated with the anti-gay slur “faggot” in white paint, made quite a statement. But it was the outspoken Vic Mensa’s outfit that blasted police NWA style and demanded The Feds to Free Assata [Shakur, a self-proclaimed escaped slave and a member of the Black Panther Party living in exile in Cuba since 1979].

The show opened with a performance by Nicki Minaj with “Trini Dem Girls.” Taylor Swift later joined her onstage to perform “The Night Is Still Young.” OK, so they buried the hatchet.

Macklemore’s performance in Downtown, LA, recreating his video, with Kool Moe Dee, Melle Mel and Grandmaster Caz, was a hit.

Next up…this year’s host Miley Cyrus and sporting her costume custom locs in blonde and later pink, a colorful display of ridiculousness. No, I am not going to even point it the-cultural-appropriation out.

Why this writer continues to watch? Kanye West will receive the Jeremy Scott-designed Video Vanguard Award and Pharrell Williams is scheduled to perform. Expectantly awaiting to be entertained. Kanye’s intro video is Dope and Taylor Swift is about to bring him onstage. Stay tuned.

This year’s award was held at the Microsoft Theater on Sunday, August 30, in Los Angeles.
