Whether Nicki Minaj intended to or not, she rivaled Kanye West’s jaw-dropping MTV VMA dust up with Taylor Swift this past weekend when she infamously blasted VMA host Miley Cyrus for criticizing her in a recent interview. Since then, fans have been debating about whether the shocking onstage diss from Minaj was real or faked, but according to sources, the beef is real.
In case you missed it, the beef started last week when Cyrus criticized Minaj for complaining about her hit “Anaconda” video not being nominated for Video of the Year. Minaj went on to accuse MTV and other sources of media of disregarding the cultural contributions of Black women in favor of praising their white counterparts, whom she pointed out often appropriate black culture.
Cyrus told The New York Times, “If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself. Say: ‘This is the reason why I think it’s important to be nominated. There’s girls everywhere with this body type,’”
She added, “What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love.”
This Sunday, when Minaj was accepting her win for Best Hip-Hop Video for “Anaconda,” she shocked fans around the world with a scathing attack at Cyrus.
“And now…back to…this b—- that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press, Miley, what’s good?!” Minaj growled at Cyrus.
A shocked and frustrated Cyrus responded, “Hey, we’re all in this industry, we all do interviews, and we all know how they manipulate shit. Nicki, congratulations.”
Since the dust up, many fans have claimed that the incident seemed staged, pointing out the fact that Minaj laughed at one point while bashing Cyrus.
According to People, a source claims Minaj was indeed just playing around.
“Nicki was joking,” the source said, pointing out the laughter from Minaj. “You could see her laughing toward the end.”
However, MTV released a statement yesterday, claiming that they took no role in the beef between Cyrus and Minaj and that it’s 100 percent real.
Entertainment Weekly also reports that a source told them that “Miley stormed off stage cursing in anger after that moment.”
Neither Minaj nor Cyrus have directly commented on the beef, but for now fans are left to wait and see which one of them will speak out first to confirm what’s really going on between them.
