Police officers in Madison, New Jersey have charged NFL star Antonio Cromartie’s wife with a crime. However, they have decided to issue a statement regarding the charges days after she was initially pulled over by police.

On the morning of Sept. 25, Terricka Cromartie was driving through Madison, New Jersey when she was stopped by a White police officer. Her husband, Antonio, currently plays for the New York Jets and the team is headquartered close to Madison. According to the Census, over 13,700 Whites live in the town compared to only 500 Blacks.

When Terricka asked why she was stopped, the officer simply replied by saying, “I just wanted to know why you were in Madison.” Terricka was not given a ticket and she was eventually allowed to leave.

She filmed the encounter and said that she was a victim of racial profiling. Days later, the Madison Police Department issued a statement on their Facebook page saying that Terricka would be charged with operating a vehicle while using a cell phone and having tinted windows.

The ridiculous charges prove that some police districts aren’t really in the business of maintaining the law. When unqualified individuals are allowed to have positions of power, their poor decisions could lead to catastrophic effects.

It’s apparent that the police officer who stopped Terricka profiled her due to race. But it’s also unfortunate that the entire Madison Police Department appears to be ran by officers who are more hellbent on proving a point than stopping real crime.

Terricka’s claim of racial profiling will reportedly be reviewed by the county.
