Black Texas mom blasts textbook publisher for calling slaves immigrant workers

It is important when children receive their school textbooks for the year that parents take a look at what their child is reading. That is what Texas mom Roni Dean-Burren did when her son sent her a cellphone video of his new World Geography book published by McGraw-Hill Education.

In the book under the immigration section, noted publisher McGraw-Hill Education had an image and description that shocked the mother. The caption stated “The Atlantic Slave Trade between the 1500s and 1800s brought millions of workers from Africa to the Southern United States to work on agricultural plantations.” The picture and statement in the book shocked Dennis-Burren, and she used YouTube to express her outrage.

The section of the book was called patterns of immigration and failed to mention that these Africans were kidnapped and forced into servitude by White slaveholders. These were not immigrant workers, such as Mexicans, seeking a job. Since the video went viral on social media there has been considerable outrage over this blatant lie about a historical fact. The response from parents and others forced the publisher to post the following statement on its Facebook page:

Despite the fact that the book was written and edited by several dozen individuals holding doctorates in various fields, this gross misrepresentation of slavery still made in to print. The state of Texas and local school boards determine which textbooks are used in the classroom. This lie that downplays the crime of American slavery was determined to be suitable by the educators of Texas.
