It’s a no brainer that gay men have to deal with homophobia in this world, sometimes even from within their own community, but it’s also true that racism is a prevalent issue in the gay community when it comes to the dating scene. It’s so prevalent that even a handsome former rugby star like Casey Conway recently spoke up about the racist remarks he’s received from white men in the dating scene of his Australian homeland.

In a new interview with NITV, Conway, who is an openly gay Aboriginal Australian, spoke about his decision to come out of the closet.

“I was out-and-about on the [gay] scene and meeting people. I was doing that undercover and it finally came to a point where I had to start accepting it. I wanted more than what I was having,” he said.

Although Conway assumed he’d find freedom to just be himself after he came out of the closet, he soon found out that being out and proud in the Sydney, Australia gay scene also meant that he was still a minority and still subject to racism from potential suitors.

“There was a lot of casual racism. People would say things like, ‘You’re hot for an Aboriginal guy’ or ‘I’ve never been with a black guy.’ I’d think, ‘You know that’s not a compliment?'”

Indeed it isn’t. It’s unfortunate that racism seems to pierce every community on every continent, but at least Conway is speaking out against the ignorance in his nation.
