Community leaders in Chicago joined forces over the weekend to demand justice for Tyshawn Lee’s family. Leaders from Young Leaders Alliance and Black Lives Matters went door to door to question residents where Tyshawn died. Pastor Jedidiah Brown led the effort. The groups talked with Tyshawn’s classmate and other elders and youth. They then went to the site of the actual murder in the alley where a memorial was held.
The next morning, the memorial was burned to the ground by an unidentified perpetrator. Tyshawn’s honor has been disrespected. People are heartbroken and outraged by the turn of recent events concerning this murder. Tyshawn’s killer remains at large and questions have not been answered. Community leaders believe the killer is known by community members.
Tyshawn’s’s funeral will be held Tuesday, Nov. 10. Many more young people were murdered over the weekend as a result of violence in Chicago. One murder included a teenage boy who left Chicago to live in Virginia but his family returned to the city, and within a week he had been murdered. His mother stated she left because of the violence and wishes they had never returned.
