Motown living legend, Stevie Wonder’s US tour is wrapping up with a stop in Detroit on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Joe Louis Arena at 8 p.m. His Detroit concert is sure to be phenomenal as it’s where his roots are and it’s also near sold-out.
Wonder just scored a huge win in the city of Detroit itself. On Thursday, Nov. 19, the Detroit City Council approved the request to rename a Detroit city street after the Motown legend. The area of Milwaukee Avenue and Woodward Avenue are located near the Amtrak station, and is the preferred location to be renamed, said Sharon DuMas, chairperson of the Stevie Wonder Tribute Committee and founder of Urban Training and Development.
“We think it’s a fitting time to honor Stevie with a visible landmark between the heart of the city and the business and entertainment districts closer to downtown,” said DuMas. “With the repopulation of the city, and with the passing of so many years since the Motown era, we don’t want anyone forgetting how important people like Stevie have been to Detroit’s history.”
The unveiling will be held in May 2016, when Wonder will celebrate his 66th birthday. He’ll also be honored during the same time with a Living Legend Tribute Concert, spearheaded by DuMas and the Stevie Wonder Tribute Committee.
Fans can continue to show their support for Wonder’s street name change by using #Street4Stevie on all of their social media accounts to bring more awareness to this wonderful change.
