Back in October, Keke Palmer had fans in shock when she released the video for “I Don’t Belong To You,” which saw her leaving behind a male lover, played by actor-singer Rotimi, and ending up with sex siren Cassie. Since then, there’s been talk about Palmer’s sexuality but the actress decided to remain mum on the issue. Now, though, she’s finally talking about the matter and claiming that she doesn’t want to be stuck in a label.
In a new interview with People, Palmer discussed the steamy video and was asked if it was her way of coming out as gay or bisexual.
“The video was to represent the young woman today – it’s not the traditional woman anymore – and not the specifics of ‘Am I gay? Am I straight? Am I bi?'” Palmer explained. “I’m making the rules for myself, and I don’t have to be stuck down to one label.”
Palmer then explained that her identity doesn’t need to be defined or explained for the masses, especially since she’s not sure what she’ll be or whom she’ll end up with in the future.
“I don’t feel the need to define nothin’ to nobody, because I’m always changing. Why say that I’m this or that when I might not be tomorrow?” she said. “I’m gonna follow my own feelings and my own heart.”
Well, it’s certainly not the traditional statement that you’d expect to hear from a young Black woman, but we don’t doubt that she does represent a growing number of young people who are more open to the idea of sexual fluidity.
