Rapper and actor Common has signed on to play a part in a new film that’ll add yet another diverse credit to his ever-growing Hollywood résumé.
This time the 43-year-old Grammy- and Oscar–winning Chicago native will co-star with Edie Falco, Bradley Whitford and Tom Felton in an Iraq war drama titled, Leavey.
The story will follow Leavey and her military combat dog, Rex, who saved the lives of countless soldiers by searching out roadside bombs ahead of military caravans during two tours of duty in Iraq between 2004 and 2006. Common will take on the role of Sgt. Gunney Massey, who is in charge of the kennels at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
Most recently, Common was last seen in the award-winning film, Selma, for which he won the Oscar for best original song alongside John Legend. Up next for the “Speak My Piece” rapper are appearances in the Will Smith and Jared Leto-led ensemble, Suicide Squad, and a role opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick 2.
Leavey is set to begin production in March 2016.
