During the formation of her first entrepreneurial venture, Natalie Cofield found herself looking for female mentors, but didn’t easily find them. In 2009, she founded Walker’s Legacy as a quarterly women in business lecture series designed to inspire women of all ages to walk in their professional passion and purpose. It was built around the communal goal of developing an open forum for women to engage and inspire.
The original series was named in honor of Madam C. J. Walker, the first self-made female millionaire in U.S. history, and Walker’s biography was one that Cofield read often when she needed inspiration. Their mission is to cultivate an eco-system of access designed to inspire, equip and engage a global network of emerging and established businesswomen of color while embodying the legacy of Madam C. J. Walker by establishing the future generation of enterprising female millionaires of color. The organization has over 10,000 members nationally with expansion plans for 2016.
Current local chapters include Los Angele; Atlanta; Houston; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Washington, D.C.; Greenville, S.C.; San Antonio, Texas; Orlando, FL; and Baton Rouge, La. The organization’s new 2016 expansion markets include: Baltimore, Detroit, Oakland, New Orleans, St. Louis, Miami and New York, bringing the total number of national affiliate markets to seventeen.
