While there is yet a verdict to be reached in the shooting death of Samuel DuBose by a campus police officer at the University of Cincinnati, the academic institution has agreed to pay $4.8 million to his family.

In addition to the cash, the University of Cincinnati will cover for tuition and fees for all 12 of DuBose’s children, who range in age from 4 to 23. It doesn’t stop there, they have plans to erect a memorial in memory of DuBose and include his family on efforts to reform the campus police department.

DuBose, 43, was shot to death on July 19. 2015 for not having a license plate on the front of his car, a violation of Ohio law. Former University of Cincinnati police officer, Ray Tensing, then 25, pleaded not guilty, claiming he feared being dragged under the car as DuBose tried to drive away, and is awaiting a trial date. He is out on a $1 million bail, against DuBose’s mother’s wishes.
